Not much to update in general. Continued to explore the city and pick up a few things. Weather is a little warmer, so I can say that I have actually been warm somewhere other than under my many blankets.
The university was open today, so I have a little more support from that side.
My huge success that just happened: I walked into a place that seemed to serve noodles, and had some characters that looked familiar on the menu board. I walked confidently up to the counter and did my best “牛肉é¢æ¡” (beef noodles). The clerk responded positively and charged me the amount of money I expected.
I am now looking at a damn tasty bowl of beef noodles. Huzzah!
Edit: I also just enjoyed “一个蛋挞” (an egg tart). It had a little dollop of jelly on it, which was new to me, but not unwelcome.

During my time in Taiwan I could order one thing verbally, bubble tea (zhen zhu nai cha), and I got quite good at it. Other than that, I could not even order a coffee in a coffee shop without being met by confused stares and an attempt to find someone who spoke a little English. When I had to eat alone, my only option was to head to a night market with food stalls where I could point to stuff I wanted to eat. I spent a good deal of time feeling totally illiterate and incompetent. So, you are doing very well–congratulations! Good to hear you’re settling in.

I envy you and your egg tarts. Will look around to see if I can find Macau-style egg tarts here. Eunice?

Great 🙂 Have you found the 拉é¢é¥é¦† yet? There used to be one on the corner of xixi road and yigu road. I loved eating pulled noodle in the winter.

Kat – I’m pretty sure they exist somewhere in Vancouver. I shall ask my sources.

Thanks Kat. I think Greg mentioned a place to me before, but I’ve forgotten it. There are probably a few in Richmond. I especially like the xinjiang style pulled noodle soups, but I’m open to trying different version 🙂
