{"id":1218,"date":"2011-01-28T23:22:32","date_gmt":"2011-01-29T06:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregbaker.ca\/blog\/?p=1218"},"modified":"2011-01-28T23:22:32","modified_gmt":"2011-01-29T06:22:32","slug":"wheres-the-beef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gregbaker.ca\/blog\/2011\/01\/28\/wheres-the-beef\/","title":{"rendered":"Where&#8217;s the Beef?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Step 1: Taco Bell sued because their &#8220;Edible Beef-like Taco Substance&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbc11news.com\/regionalnews\/headlines\/Taco_Bell_turns_up_the_heat_against_allegations_that_its_beef_is_anything_but_114847854.html\">contains only 35% meat<\/a>, instead of the 40% required by law to call your product &#8220;beef&#8221; in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Taco Bell president publishes <a href=\"http:\/\/i.huffpost.com\/gen\/242169\/TACO-BELL-MEAT-BEEF-LAWSUIT-NEWSPAPER-ADS.jpg\">a letter<\/a> saying &#8220;no, our product is 88% beef, and the other 12% is unicorn jerky&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Aside on terminology:  there are three similar terms floating around here.  I&#8217;m going to use them as such:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>beef: muscle tissue of a cow.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;beef&#8221;: things that can be sold with the word &#8220;beef&#8221; on them, and apparently have to be 40% beef.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Edible Beef-like Taco Substance&#8221;: what Taco Bell serves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 3: I think to myself, 88% is a suspicious number.  I mean, I have seen what comes in a Taco Bell taco, and it ain&#8217;t 88% cow, and claiming it is is a bit of a stretch.<\/p>\n<p>Step 4: Waitaminute&hellip; &#8220;beef&#8221; has to be 40% beef. Is Taco Bell saying that their &#8220;Beef-like Taco Substance&#8221; is 88% &#8220;beef&#8221;, not actually 88% beef?  But &#8220;beef&#8221; only has to be 40% beef.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>88% &times; 40% = 35%<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, the President of Taco Bell just announced to the world &#8220;claims that our taco filling is only thirty-five percent beef are completely inaccurate.  It&#8217;s actually thirty-FIVE percent beef, and I&#8217;d stake my career on it!
